See what\u0432\u0402\u2122s new on the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT!<\/b> For 2013<\/b>, Dodge Challenger SRT8<\/b> gets three-mode (rather than two-mode) adaptive damping for its suspension \u0432\u0402\u201d\u0412 Auto, Sport, and Track; and Launch Control (on both automatic and manual cars; details are further down this page) increases straight-line acceleration. In \u0432\u0402\u045aTrack\u0432\u0402\u045c mode, higher damping rates combine with a performance shifting and gear holding feature that allows the driver full shift control when using the steering wheel mounted paddle controls or AutoStick. The ADS system on the Challenger SRT8 392 features the fastest turn-in and most nimble handling characteristics of any SRT product (presumably excluding Viper).<\/p>\n

The 2013 Challenger SRT8 \u0432\u0402\u045aCore\u0432\u0402\u045c<\/b> had a black grille and black SRT rear spoiler, black 392 decal on the front fenders, 20-inch wheels with black pockets, and black Brembo brake calipers; new colors were HEMI\u0412\u00ae Orange Pearl Coat and Plum Crazy Pearl Coat (Phantom Black Tri-coat Pearl and Redline Tri-coat Pearl were reserved for non-Core cars). As with the normal Challenger SRT8, the Core has either a manual or automatic. The base price was US$39,990 including destination.<\/p>\n

The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 was given a big boost in horsepower and torque with its new 392-cubic inch Hemi V8, packing 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque \u0432\u0402\u201d\u0412 90 lb.-ft. more torque at 2,900 rpm compared with the previous 6.1-liter V-8 engine. Chrysler claims 0-60 times in the \u0432\u0402\u045ahigh 4-second range\u0432\u0402\u045c\u0412 and quarter mile times \u0432\u0402\u045ain the high 12s.\u0432\u0402\u045c\u0412 (Some variants of the Challenger SRT8, such as Yellow Jacket, are in our \u0432\u0402\u045aspecial Challengers page.\u0432\u0402\u045c) Fuel economy was rated at 14 city, 23 highway, regardless of transmission.<\/p>\n

Launch Control<\/b>: When the vehicle is at a complete stop, the driver presses ESC twice, then (on manuals) depresses the clutch and quickly applies full throttle (for automatics, the driver pushes down on the brake with one foot, and applies full throttle briefly with the other). Launch control holds the engine at the desired speed and waits for the driver to release the clutch or brake. Through the EVIC screen, the manual-transmission driver can adjust the launch rpm from 2500-4500 in 250 rpm increments, while automatics are kept to 1,825 rpm. Launch Control then uses engine torque management to achieve controlled wheelslip for maximum acceleration up to 62 mph (100 kph).<\/p>\n

The original 392 Hemi engine arrived in the 1957 model year, replacing the 354 Hemi in Chryslers and Imperials. It was quickly adopted by drag racers, and was used in historical speed runs on land and water.<\/p>\n

The Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 also brings world-class ride and handling with high-performance braking and the latest technology that delivers improved fuel efficiency. New, highly damped shocks have a firm ride that maintains the feel for everyday commuting, while recalibrated suspension geometry improves Challenger\u0432\u0402\u2122s balance, corning ability and steering responsiveness. Quicker steering ratios and new negative camber settings all around dramatically improve Challengers appetite for cornering. The performance SRT-tuned, fully hydraulic steering system also has been improved with a new, heavy-duty pump and revised gearing to give drivers more direct feel and on-center response.<\/p>\n

The result: the 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 is now more nimble and playfully “tossable” while still capable of an incredible .93g of lateral acceleration on the skid pad \u0432\u0402\u201c the most of any production Challenger.<\/p>\n

Inside, a new three-spoke steering wheel has a carbon fiber-accented leather wrap and silver metallic painted spokes; a four gauge cluster has chromed accent rings and new, unique SRT graphics, with the performance-adapted EVIC featuring the usual radio and trip information along with 0-60 time, 60-0 braking time, G-force, eighth-mile, and quarter-mile times. Power lumbar front seats are standard; and now, rear seat access is eased by \u0432\u0402\u045aseatback tilt with memory\u0432\u0402\u045c\u0412 and a more easily reached release handle. The front passenger seat has tilt and slide with memory.<\/p>\n

The 2012 Challenger SRT8 392 started at $44,077, but carries a $1,300 gas-guzzler tax on the automatic, and a $1,000 tax on the manual.<\/p>\n

Dodge Challenger 392 Inaugural Edition<\/h2>\n

To kick off 2011-model year production, Dodge will build 1,492 Inaugural Edition cars (392 to be sold in Canada), all with unique customizations of the Dodge Challenger SRT8.<\/p>\n

Two colors and new full-body stripe combinations include Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. All Inaugural Edition models will ride on 20-inch SRT-exclusive wheels with a polished face and satin black painted pockets. Unique \u0432\u0402\u045a392 HEMI\u0432\u0402\u045c badges flank both fenders touting the historically significant V-8 engine; it also comes with a 392 key fob. Mopar quad exhaust tips deliver the performance exhaust note while adding a serious muscle car styling cue.<\/p>\n

A larger front splitter and integrated front fender spats give this Challenger SRT8 392 better overall high-speed aerodynamics and balance. As many have observed though, people always tend to place this golden age in the past. Alas, out of all those who complain about this error in judgement, not too many seem to be willing to correct it. Fortunately, Dodge is one of the exceptions and with its Challenger, they are showing us the golden age is now.<\/p>\n

When you look at<\/strike> are intimidated by the Challenger, balance is probably the last thing that comes to mind. And yet this is precisely what this muscle car displays. Whether you\u2019re cruising on the highway with your significant other or trashing the car on mountain roads, the Challenger knows how to deliver its brutal presence in a comfortable manner.<\/p>\n

This shouldn\u2019t come so much as a surprise, given the fact that the Challenger is a story written back in the day of the Daimler-Chrysler affair. Yes, there is quite a bit of Mercedes under the hood of this car. If only Mercedes would make an AMG version of the E-Class Coupe, we\u2019d be in for a pretty tasty comparison.<\/p>\n

Still, our Challenger SRT8 392 test car is truly spicy on its own. Just look at it! This has to be the most American-looking car you can find in a showroom today. Its sheer appearance serves as one of the sweetest pieces of US history lessons ever. <\/p>\n

Whereas the Mustang has allowed itself to be influenced by Europeans, the Challenger looks just right for the American dream.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Despite this, we find ourselves amused by all the fuss people make about the two fat stripes running across the entire body of the SRT8. To our eyes, the car would look even better without them. This iron fist needs no leather glove to make it appear more menacing.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is the reason for which the visual differences between our 6.4-liter V8-powered tester and a V6 Challenger are limited. The wheels, front fender spats and the rear deck lid spoiler are all the added visual drama this bad boy will ever need.<\/p>\n

As we climb aboard, the solid door closes with an adequate feel. This is all to prepare us for the surrounding environment – the seats, steering wheel, dashboard instruments, almost everything in here is extra large.<\/p>\n

Perfectly suitable, but this still doesn\u2019t save the cabin, which simply falls behind the exterior. Sure, the retro theme is here, but it could\u2019ve been deeper and, more importantly, implemented in a nicer manner (read: with superior plastics).<\/p>\n

Well, at least the ergonomics are good – the shifter is placed so that you could grab it while blindfolded.

The tilted center console guides you to it. The steering wheel serves as another good example of this. It has all sorts of controls, including on its back and they\u2019re all very easy to operate. Despite having been shrunken with the last facelift, the wheel is still massive. All the better to make it feel masculine. Now. where are those dumbbells?<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t manage to find them, but, instead, we noticed a pair of brilliant front seats lying around the Dodge Challenger SRT8\u2019s cabin. You could probably turn this into a seven-seater just by replacing the front seats with thinner units, but we love them this way. These butch-looking seats are extra comfortable and provide decent support.<\/p>\n

On top of that, or rather around it, we find quite a lot of space, even for the passengers riding in the back. And since a man also needs his tools, the boot is pretty generous. 16.2 cubic feet (460 liters), to be more precise.<\/p>\n

Still, before we exit the Challenger\u2019s cabin, we have to mention that the visibility is good. You wouldn\u2019t necessarily expect that given the sleek appearance of the greenhouse, but it\u2019s the truth. A nice treat to tackle the city around us.<\/p>\n

You can feel the weight as you move from one traffic light to another. Then again, this sensation is only there because we focused on it. Switching out attention to the way in which this muscle car moves itself on the boulevards, we find ourselves smiling. <\/p>\n

\n

The serious manner in which the Challenger travels makes you glad you\u2019re aboard.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is not an easy car to drive around town, but we\u2019d be glad with having to do this every day.<\/p>\n

The moderate manner in which the coffee is shaking in the cupholder means the adaptive suspension is doing a pretty nifty job at filtering out the menacing tarmac issues underneath us. As for the steering, the hydraulic setup does make you work a bit, but only when parking. All for the better to keep yourself connected.<\/p>\n

Still, you will have to watch the throttle a bit. The overall feel is pleasingly docile for 470 horses running around the city, but the gas pedal mapping is a different story. As we dip into the throttle a little, the car tends to be on the sensitive side, willing to surge forward. Nonetheless, as you go past the first 30 percent of pedal travel, things soften up a bit and you can use the Challenger with ease.<\/p>\n

That is exactly the kind of activity we\u2019ve immersed ourselves in at the moment. One doesn\u2019t position the Challenger SRT8 392 on the road. The car does this all by itself, as it hunkers down for the long haul.<\/p>\n

The squared-off hood in front of us feels like the perfect spot to see the world from.
<\/strong>
While many cars have what they call a power dome these days, half of the Challenger\u2019s hood is basically a power dome.<\/p>\n

The highway is pretty busy at this time of the day and yet the Challenger makes us feel more than confident.<\/p>\n

The Challenger is stable at high speeds and it puts no strain on its driver whatsoever, while managing to make you feel alive at any speeds.<\/p>\n

Sure, the Camaro and the Mustang can pull similar stunts, but the Challenger does it better. <\/p>\n

\n

This muscle car is ideal for a trip across the country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We\u2019re cruising at a little 2,000 rpm, with the car in the four-cylinder mode. Ah, yes, this is one of the treats offered by the six point four liters of Hemi under that massive hood. Still, you can only have this on the automatic models.<\/p>\n

This is just one of the updates the V8 offers. Another one would be the plastic air intakes. How is plastic better than the aluminium on the previous engine, the 6.1, one might ask. Well, the new construction allows for a two-stage plenum with air flaps to be present. This can vary the intake ram length according to the rpm requirements.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the timing is variable, with the intake valves being able to play games. Together with the variable exhaust valve timing, this allows the Hemi V8 to offer better mid-range punch. Sure, the big V8 still feels better when you take it higher in the rev range, but it won\u2019t complain about the rest either.<\/p>\n

There aren\u2019t many things in this world that feel as raw as putting the pedal to the metal in a Challenger SRT8. It\u2019s still comfortable, there\u2019s no explosion of power, but the sheer force of it makes the feeling become addictive. Up from 2,500 rpm you can ask anything you like from the beefy V8. Still, once you go past 4,000 rpm it all feels like you\u2019ve added a miniature nitrous shot.<\/i> <\/p>\n
